Kerala is well known for seafood delicacies.Being a coastal state Kerala has much emphasis on sea food,the daily meals of most of the Kerala house holds include a variety of seafood dishes like fish,prawns, mussels or crabs.
Kerala crab roast is very popular,and tasty dish,a perfect blend of roasted coconut,coccum and Kerala spices.Crab is an all time favorite dish,but its not easy to prepare,especially the cleaning part or handling live crabs,but when it comes to taste the efforts are worth

I always like live fresh water crabs,they taste so good but handling live crabs is not so easy we have to be very careful.I bought this fresh crabs from nearest super market and they taste so good and no worries about the cleaning part these crabs are already cleaned.


so just come to the cooking part, my crab roast is a perfect blend of roasted coconut ,Gambooge and Kerala spices.The crab meat has a delicious sweet taste so this spices will perfectly balance it with out loosing the exact crab flavor.

so here is the delicious Kerala style crab roast recipe.enjoy it……

- 3 nos crab (700g)
- 3 nos Gamboog e
- 1 chilly table spoon red powder
- 1 / 4 teaspoons turmeric powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon blackpepper whole
- 4 - 5 cloves garlic
- 2 - 3 nos chilly green
- 1/2 cup coconut grated
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1/2 cup shallot chopped
- 2 nos chilly whole
- salt as needed
- as required water

- Wash crabs,Pull the top shell from the body,discard the stomach bag and grayish white and wash well.cut each crab in to two pieces,separate legs.
- soak gambooge in to 2-3 teaspoon hot water.peel garlic,wash and slice.
- heat 2 teaspoon oil in a pan and fry coconut until light brown.switch off the stove add all spices powders to the roasted coconut and saute well for few minutes.
- then remove from pan and transfer to a mixer then add garlic ,green chili ,mustard seeds and whole pepper in to it.add 3-4 teaspoon water and grind well in to a fine paste.
- heat remaining oil in a clay pot or thick bottom vessel, add curry leaves and whole chilly.saute well, then add thinly sliced shallot .saute well till shallot become transparent,then add the ground coconut+spices paste in to the oil.saute well in a medium flame till masala turns to dark and oil separates. ,you will get a pleasant aroma.then add crab, gambooge and salt in to it.mix well .
- add sufficient water for cooking crab.cover with a lid and cook until crab is done and gravy is almost dry(stir in between).
- then switch off the stove.pour 2-3 teaspoon fresh coconut oil to the crab,mix well and serve hot with kappa(boiled tapioca)or steamed rice.
add spices as per your taste level.
