Crab Varattiyathu (Kerala style Crab roast)
Kerala style crab roast:-A delicious Kerala style crab preparation.Crab cooked in a roasted coconut based gravy with gambooge and Kerala spices.its a typical Kerala style preparation usually serving with steamed rice or boiled tapioca.

  1. Wash crabs,Pull the top shell from the body,discard the stomach bag and grayish white and wash well.cut each crab in to two pieces,separate legs.
  2. soak gambooge in to 2-3 teaspoon hot water.peel garlic,wash and slice.
  3. heat 2 teaspoon oil in a pan and fry coconut until light brown.switch off the stove add all spices powders to the roasted coconut and saute well for few minutes.
  4. then remove from pan and transfer to a mixer then add garlic ,green chili ,mustard seeds and whole pepper in to it.add 3-4 teaspoon water and grind well in to a fine paste.
  5. heat remaining oil in a clay pot or thick bottom vessel, add curry leaves and whole chilly.saute well, then add thinly sliced shallot .saute well till shallot become transparent,then add the ground coconut+spices paste in to the oil.saute well in a medium flame till masala turns to dark and oil separates. ,you will get a pleasant aroma.then add crab, gambooge and salt in to it.mix well .
  6. add sufficient water for cooking crab.cover with a lid and cook until crab is done and gravy is almost dry(stir in between).
  7. then switch off the stove.pour 2-3 teaspoon fresh coconut oil to the crab,mix well and serve hot with kappa(boiled tapioca)or steamed rice.
